Dom Pérignon: Stop letting your products fund the radical lobbying of the NRA.

The National Rifle Association is one of the most radical voices fighting against gun control in the US. The NRA is famously intransigent, opposing common-sense gun control that even its own members support, such a requiring background checks for gun purchases, or basic eligibility requirements for people to be allowed to carry weapons in public.

And top beverage companies, including Dom Pérignon, are helping the NRA fund its agenda. Through its website, the NRA runs a wine club, with a portion of each sale directly going to fund the group’s radical, dangerous agenda.

When reached for comment, the creator of Dom Pérignon said “I’m not happy about it, and I don’t support the NRA, but... it’s out of my control.” But just a few days ago, Australian winery Yalumba pulled its wines from the NRA program. It’s time for other companies to follow suit, and as one of the top companies in the industry, Dom Pérignon should lead the way.

The National Rifle Association is truly a radical organization, with many of its positions falling to the right of its own members. It is the number one obstacle to sensible gun control legislation -- like closing the private-sale loophole that allows people to buy guns without even a background check -- in the United States.

Yalumba was the first winemaker to end its association from the NRA, but it won’t be the last. For a long time, the NRA’s wine club operated in the dark, but as word of it has emerged in post-Sandy Hook scrutiny, companies are breaking away. The NRA is so worried about losing this fundraising source that it has pulled down a list of supporting wineries from its website. Fortunately, a savvy blogger found the list anyway, and we know for sure that Dom Perignon and others are still letting their wine be sold to benefit the NRA.

The more companies -- and the more prominent companies -- that do leave, the more pressure will be on the remaining winemakers to leave, and the more funding the NRA loses, the more pressure the organization will be under to stop pushing its backwards policies and start embracing common-sense gun legislation.. That’s why it’s important to let Dom Pérignon know that the time is now to end its association with this despicable group.
